Remodels increase value and make homes more functional and attractive. Unfortunately, they also make a huge mess. The dust and debris during and after a remodel can cause homeowners to question their decision. While no construction project will be tidy, you can do things to reduce the mess and make the final cleanup easier.
Contractors will often add cleaning services to the contract if a client wants this type of assistance. If you plan to do your own remodel and cleanup, however, use the tips listed below to make your life a little easier.
Prepare Before the Work Starts
Unless adequate storage space exists in your home, your first step should be to rent a storage unit. Do not try to store belongings in a garage where the boxes could block access to tools. Instead, use the opportunity to sort through stuff and throw out or give away anything not needed. Pack before you choose a rental so you get the right size storage unit.
Next, cover difficult-to-remove items like large pieces of furniture with a heavy drop cloth. The cloth will reduce the dust on the furniture and prevent any scratches. Try to at least move these items to an area in the home where work will not take place.
To keep the rest of your home clean, invest in protective coverings. Duct film keeps vents cleaner, and window protection film cuts down on the dust on glass and provides a layer of protection from airborne debris. Products like these will self-adhere to the surface but won’t leave any sticky residue when you remove them.
Use carpet protection tape or floor protection rolls, which are thick sheets of plastic, to cover floors and prevent scratches. Make paths from the work area to exit doors and the bathroom so workers and household members don’t track dust through the home.
Stay Attentive During the Remodel
While the work takes place, close all doors and use tarps or plastic sheeting across openings. The barriers prevent most of the dust from drifting into other rooms. Always clean up the work area at the end of the day. This effort prevents people from tracking the mess into other rooms. Debris left behind is also a tripping hazard.
If possible, open the windows and screens in the work area. Install a fan in the window, and aim it to blow the air out. The suction from the fan can help to pull out some of the airborne dust. Another alternative is an air scrubber. Home improvement stores often rent this type of equipment. Look for a HEPA scrubber for the most efficient removal of debris and odors from the air.
Clean Everything After the Remodel
The lightweight dust produced by floor sanders and during drywall installation sticks to everything. Wipe down all ceilings, walls, light fixtures, and window trim with a damp cloth. Use a soft, dry cloth for this purpose on any freshly painted surfaces. Also, replace or clean all filters on HVAC systems.
Next, clean or replace light bulbs. Always remove the bulbs before cleaning them because water and electricity do not mix. Vacuum everything including window screens so any dust on the screen does not blow back into the home. Use a commercial vacuum because the fine dust can damage the motors on a traditional home vacuum.
Finally, carefully remove drop cloths and tarps from the furniture. Fold the material towards the center to keep dust inside. Then, take the cloth outside to shake off the dust.
